Mountain Gorillas and Nyiragongo Volcano TreksDR Congo · 2 locations · 4 days
Day 1: Arrival
Gathering at the border Grande Barrière Rwanda-DRC. Our staff will welcome you at the border and help you with the formalities. Make sure you cross the border at 10:30 a.m. and check in at the Virunga Tourist Office, located in the Grande Barrière Border Station building opposite passport control, by 11:15 a.m. Once the check-in is complete, we will escort you to Kibumba.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Treks
After an early breakfast at the Kibumba tent camp, you will make your way down the hill to meet the ranger guide and receive a briefing before the gorilla trek. The treks usually require 1-2.5 hours walking time per trail, depending on the location of the gorilla group to be trekked and the difficulty of the terrain. After spending the allocated hour with the gorilla family group, you will return to camp, enjoy a late lunch and have the rest of the day at your leisure, including time for nature walks and bird watching.
Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano hiking
After breakfast in Kibumba, you will be accompanied to the Kibati Ranger Post at 8.15 am, where the treks to the summit of the Nyiragongo volcano begin. After your arrival in Kibati you will receive a briefing. All treks are led by park rangers, and porters (not connected to the park) can be hired from the Kibati Ranger Post. The time required to reach the summit depends on the average fitness of each group, but usually takes 4-6 hours. For fitter people it is possible to ascend and descend in one day, but the vast majority choose to stay in the basic accommodation available at the summit (included in the permit fee) as this is the best time to see the lava lake. Enjoy the scenic sunset at the summit of Nyiragongo and the exciting experience of watching the largest lava lake in the world at night. Dinner and overnight at the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano in the Mountain Hut.
Day 4: Nyiragongo Volcano descent and departure
After a very early visit to the lava lake in the morning, you will have breakfast around 7.00 am. After breakfast you will start your descent from the volcano and return to Kibati station. The average descent time is four hours. We will accompany you back to the town of Goma, take you back to the border and bid you farewell.
